How to Write a Goodbye to Gambling Letter

Nov 28, 2010 by

When you decide you’ve had enough with your addiction to gambling (or anything else) it’s helpful to put it in writing. In my Goodbye to Gambling Letter post I showed you what my Goodbye Letter looked like. Today I’m going to show you how to write yours.

The idea behind this letter is about letting go of your past and creating a new future. Talk about gambling like it was a friend of yours. Truly, you relied on it for quite a long time, just as you would a friend. Chances are good that your friendship turned sour and you don’t want to be in it anymore. Use this letter as a way to shape your new life as well. Create the closure you need on one chapter and pave the way for a better, brighter way of life.

Here are some ideas to put in your letter:

The length of time you’ve been gambling

The relationship you’ve had with gambling and how you feel about it now

The troubles that have been caused by gambling

The reasons you’re ready to say goodbye to gambling

The steps you’re going to take to get away from gambling

What your life will look like when you’re free to do your own thing

Talk about why you’re ready to commit to change now

That’s it! Pour yourself into it. Create a letter that speaks to your heart. Be sure to sign and date it. If you’ve typed it on a computer you may want to print it out so you can have it in your hands to sign and create a deeper commitment. You will probably want to look at it from time to time and this is a great way for you to gauge how far you’ve come in your recovery…or remind yourself where you want to be!

You can find my Goodbye Letter that I read to my outpatient group here in this previous post. This letter set the wheels turning on my road to recovery. I couldn’t feel better until I let go of my past. I knew that I needed to put my compulsion to gamble in my past!

Remember that you are a continually changing person and that the feelings behind a letter you write today may not be the same tomorrow. Feel free to rewrite this letter as often as you need to. Honor your process of letting go. You will make it. You are stronger than you realize. If I can do it, I know you can too!

Please feel free to share any thoughts, ideas, concerns or revelations with me. I’d love to hear them either through direct message or left as a comment below.

What are you waiting for? Go say goodbye…
