How to Be Your Own Hero

Being my own hero

What does being your own hero mean?  Are you good enough?  Are you capable?  Can you do it alone?

When we wait for other people to take control of our lives we are sending the message that we don’t trust ourselves with our own lives.  Could this be true for you?

When I first moved in with my boyfriend I told him that I love to take walks.  I figured that when he was ready he would walk me because he knew how important it was to me.  It was as if I was a dog handing my owner a leash and wagging my tail.  So I waited.  And waited…I was waiting for him to show me that he loved me by asking me to go.  When I started being my own hero I gave up on waiting.  I chose to show myself the love and know that I was going to be there to take care of myself.

These are the steps I go through when something isn’t feeling right about waiting:

  1. Awareness is the key to solving any problem, so the first thing to do is realize that you want to be your own hero.
  2. Take action.
  3. Decide that you aren’t going to accept less in your life.  Decide that you are worthy of taking care of yourself.  Know that you are worth it.
  4. Take action.
  5. Now is a perfect time to begin.  Take a step forward.  It’s never too late to take care of yourself and come to your own rescue.  Your hole may be a bit deeper, but nothing is too big to recover from.  You can do it.
  6. Take action.
  7. Open your mind to things that might help you feel better in a healthy way.  My personal favorites are walking around a park or sitting in a coffee shop.  What would you like to do?
  8. Take action.
  9. Quiet the voices in your head that are telling you that you can’t do it on your own.  You can.  You just may not want to.  You are strong.
  10. Take action.
  11. Give yourself credit for every step you take forward.  It doesn’t have to be a giant step.  If you need to, just keep taking small steps.  As long as they are in a forward motion you will gain momentum and before you know it you will be miles away from the troubles you used to have.
  12. Take action.
  13. Enjoy the rewards of feeling better!

Did you notice all of those action steps in there?  You can have the best of intentions, but if you don’t do something about it they won’t help you.

I have been practicing taking walks on my own.  This morning I hiked to the top of the hill by my place.  I was sitting on a rock watching the sun rise and I was completely filled with pleasure.  I was proud that I was taking care of myself.  I savored the joy I was feeling.  It wasn’t just about the hiking.  It was more about making myself and my needs important.  I was able to enjoy a beautiful sunrise.  It was an amazing way to start my day.  It filled me with lots of motivation and I was able to move forward in a powerful way.

Think of the things you could be accomplishing when you take care of yourself and fill up your own bucket.  Honoring the things that bring you joy spill over into other areas of your life.  I am far more creative when I’m feeling better.  I am happier and I’ve noticed that I breathe easier.  I choose to be Numb No More!  Taking the time to experience what it feels like to feel better expands my soul.  I know it will help you too.

What have you been wanting to do?  What feeds your soul?  Which action steps are you willing to take?

I would love to hear about your journey.  Please feel free to leave a comment below.  Know that your words help others as well.  We stand up as individuals and create more strength for each other.  We could all use some help, couldn’t we?
